Element AI and Mozilla Foundation Partner to Build Data Trusts and Advocate for the Ethical Data Governance of AI

Strategic partnership will chart new roadmap to make global data trusts interoperable— empowering citizens with greater control and governance over the use of their personal data for a democratized internet

LONDON, ENGLAND—October 24, 2019—At MozFest 2019, Element AI, a developer of artificial intelligence-powered (AI) services and software that help ‘operationalize AI’, today announced a strategic partnership with Mozilla, a nonprofit that believes the internet must always remain a global public resource, open and accessible to all.t. Together, both organizations will address how new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and tools present challenges and opportunities for today’s digital frontiers.

Element AI and Mozilla will immediately begin collaborating to explore data trusts, a promising tool that will give citizens and consumers more control—and greater social return—over the use of their personal information. This partnership will also fund and support policy and legal research, along with the technical and design components necessary to make data trusts a practical reality, offering an alternative model to our current broken consent-based system of data collection.

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) algorithms show great promises for our day-to-day lives, from more efficient services to better health care. As Element AI ‘operationalizes AI’ for these purposes, we’re also dedicated to the ethical governance of the massive amounts of data accessed by these algorithms,” said Marc-Etienne Ouimette, Head of Policy and Government Relations at Element AI. “Working in collaboration with the Mozilla will support our work to address the pressing needs to ensure that AI products and solutions are deployed responsibly, with the appropriate tools and guidance necessary to support companies, governments and citizens,” added Ouimette.

This strategic partnership will also support the development of artistic projects using AI as a medium; and both organizations will promote the exploration of opportunities that deploy AI solutions to maximize social returns.

“Element AI has cultivated a bold reputation as a leading responsible AI products and advisory services company,” said Mark Surman, Executive Director of Mozilla. “Their exemplary policy work and technical research capacity makes Element AI a natural partner for Mozilla to advance its goal of promoting internet health in the age of AI. We look forward to working together, and taking concrete steps for advancement.”

“We take great pride in being selected to work with the Mozilla Foundation as its responsible AI corporate partner, and we are excited about what our collaboration can bring to advance responsible AI,” said JF Gagné, CEO and co-founder of Element AI. “From the very inception of our company, we have taken the solemn responsibility to build responsible AI products, accompanying our clients and governments in understanding and deploying responsible AI. We look forward to continuing this mission in partnership with the Mozilla Foundation,” added Gagné.

About Mozilla Foundation

The work of Mozilla is guided by the Mozilla Manifesto.

The direct work of the Mozilla Foundation focuses on fueling the movement for a healthy internet. We do this by supporting a diverse group of fellows working on key internet issues, connecting open Internet leaders at events like MozFest, publishing critical research in the Internet Health Report, and rallying citizens around advocacy issues that connect the wellbeing of the Internet directly to everyday life.

The Foundation is also the sole shareholder in the Mozilla Corporation, the maker of Firefox and other open source tools. Mozilla Corporation functions as a self-sustaining social enterprise – money earned through its products is reinvested into the organization.
